Metropolitan State Student Records
An "S" on the transcript denotes "Satisfactory." Those are courses for which a Leaning Evaluation or
Leaning Assessment Agreement (same thing, new name), commonly referred to as a "competency
statement," was issued instead of a letter grade.
Metropolitan State University assigned competency statements by default during the time this coursework
was completed. Students could request a letter grade. This policy was changed during the 1990s in
response to pressure to conform to normal university practices and employers' desire to know the GPAs
of applicants for employment. Metro State did not compute GPAs during the time when this coursework
was completed, because some courses on each student's transcript had not been assigned letter grades.
